1980           The Neighborhood Centre was established in late 1980. It started off with great activity using one of the church halls in Mt Beauty.

Late 80’s     By the late 1980's things had come to a standstill. The minutes show that a meeting was called to decide whether the centre should fold or continue. Fortunately some brave souls stepped forward and took up the challenge of resurrecting the centre. Incorporation was applied for and granted in September 1988.

1991           This momentum was given a boost in 1991 when the Mt Beauty Workmen’s Club decided to dispose of one of their original buildings. The old clubhouse was sectioned and relocated from near the bowling green in Mt Beauty to its present site in Tennis Court Ave.

Mid 90’s      The centre went from strength to strength in the mid 90's offering many facilities and courses for the people of Mt Beauty

Late 90’s     Unfortunately the late 90's were not so kind to the centre. Activity came to a standstill and the Alpine shire wished the centre to relocate so that they could demolish the building. In late 1999 a new committee under the chairmanship of Alex McCullough set out to revive the fortunes of the centre.

Early 00’s    The first step was to renovate the interior of the building and paint the exterior. The centre was lucky to have the submission writing skills of Yvonne Evans who was instrumental in gaining the funding for the exterior renovations and the new extension for a large conference/meeting room as well as the bank of computers from Networking the Nation funds.

Mid 00’s      A fully equipped training kitchen was added to the building. This has allowed the centre to run a highly successful cooking course which commenced in late 2004 for men only called "Secret Men’s Business". In response a cooking course for women was developed and launched in 2006 called "Saucy Sheila's”

In 2005 the Alpine Shire gave management rights to the old "Gray-Y" hall to the centre and funded its renovation. This hall is now used by the Mt Beauty Art Group and physical activity classes such as Karate/Tai Chi, Strength Training and Dancing classes.

The Bottom Line”

In 2000 the building was valued at $10,000 - for removal.
In 2005 the replacement value of the complex was
$495,000.
